Believe it or not, yes! Bearplane takes loose inspiration from Wojtek, the real-life bear who served alongside Polish soldiers in World War II. Our version adds a few more jet packs and shenanigans :D (Watch the video below to learn about the real Wojtek!)
Bearplane took flight during the 2020 lockdown, when travel and work screeched to a halt. Its developer, Matthew Burton, began exploring the quirkiest corners of history and discovered Wojtek, the ammo-hauling WWII bear. It was a tale too wild not to inspire a loosely adapted game.
Developed in Unity with C#, Bearplane’s early stages focused entirely on nailing the feel. Over the course of three years, Burton refined the movement mechanics, combat system, and particle effects until everything clicked. Inspirations included Fallout’s brutal combat wrapped in cheerful 1940s vibes, Skyrim’s shout mechanic, and Tom & Jerry’s perfectly synced slapstick timing.
In 2023, artists Leo Siebert, Jordan Wadell, Vinnie Peters, and Michael Burgess joined the project to hand-draw characters in a 1940s-cartoon style, paint sweeping scenic backdrops, and design wartime-propaganda UI. The team met in person for just four sessions, then handled the rest of their collaboration remotely via Discord.
Since then, over 7,000 hours (and many cups of coffee) have gone into transforming the completely reasonable idea of a jetpack-wearing bear into a fully playable game.
Composers Sean Smith and Jacob Souders wrote Bearplane’s big-band, swing-era soundtrack. The score was recorded with a live jazz ensemble and brims with soaring brass and the kind of swagger you'd expect from a bear with a jetpack. (Listen to the soundtrack below!)
Why, it’s only the most cutting-edge food and beverage company this side of the war effort! Atomic Mills is the (totally fictional) manufacturer behind bold wartime favorites like Nukey Nectar, Honey Thunder Cola, and Flappy Flakes Breakfast Cereal. Founded during the heyday of World War II, Atomic Mills was dedicated to using the limitless potential of nuclear energy and the hard work of radioactive bees to give our brave soldiers a nutritional advantage on the battlefield.
Fueled by patriotism and a suspicious orange glow, Atomic Mills delivered explosive flavor and questionable science in every bite.
Both! You can fly solo or connect a controller for local co-op. Player 2 controls Rocket Rat and his trusty rifle. Team up and double the firepower!
On mobile, play with touch controls or a gamepad. On PC, use mouse, keyboard, or a controller. Bearplane also runs great on Steam Deck.
Bearplane runs exceedingly well on Steam Deck. In fact, a lot of the focus for the PC version has gone into optimizing it specifically for Steam Deck, ensuring buttery-smooth performance at 90 FPS.
The gamepad layout should be set by default. If it’s not, we recommend switching the controller layout type to "Gamepad" in your Steam Deck settings for the best experience.
The core gameplay is the same, but there are a few key differences:
Just tap the “Buy Full Game” button on the main menu to get all the goodies and unleash the full Bearplane experience.
Absolutely. You can play offline with no penalties or restrictions.
Definitely! We’re planning monthly updates packed with new hats, game modes, and surprises.
Not yet, but we’re aiming to include cloud sync in a future update.
Bearplane features cartoon violence, dismemberment, and blood. Parental discretion is advised.
The full game is in English, but Rocket Rat’s dialogue and tutorials are localized into 8 additional languages: French, Spanish, German, Polish, Portuguese, Italian, Japanese, and Simplified Chinese.
